Case Studies: Watch as VMware Partners Help Customers Thrive

It’s not enough to simply talk about the technology behind end user computing (EUC) and cloud solutions that VMware brings to market and implements via our partners every day. Case studies bring a human side to IT and help us understand problems in the customers’ own words, so let’s take a look at some of the success stories. 

Back to School Basics: BYOD

St Edmund’s College is England’s oldest Catholic school with 800 students aged 3 to 18 from the UK and around the globe who attend. The college’s aging fleet of 580 desktops were becoming expensive and time consuming to maintain, especially with a students who expect new ways of working and use their own mobile devices.

Working with RivaNET, an IT reseller based in Surrey, the college’s Network Manager Stuart Winfield began a large scale virtualization project across the school, choosing VMware’s virtualization and management software.

With VMware vSphere, Stuart and his team cut the school’s 20 physical servers down to three. Following this successful server virtualization rollout, RivaNET worked with Stuart and his IT team to look at a more effective way of managing the desktop PCs across the school’s campus, while at the same time addressing new demands from pupils and teachers around BYOD.

RivaNET advised St Edmund’s College to implement a Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) using VMware Horizon View. This has transformed the school’s 580 desktop PCs into 200 thin PCs.

And the biggest win is that VMware software provides a secure way for pupils to access the school network from any device. “The children are now using iPods, iPhones, iPads, Macbooks, PCs, and Android devices to access educational software from home which they normally cannot afford for personal use,” said Winfield. “It also means they can easily work from home during snow days, with their work being saved securely on the school network servers which are backed up regularly.”

Delivering Desktop-as-a-Service, and Much More

Colt Technology Services Group Limited is not only a VMware partner, but a customer, too. According to Director of Strategic Partner Management Gideon Wilkins, the company has been leveraging a range of VMware solutions that include the Horizon Suite and the vCloud Suite.

The network services provider works throughout Europe and offers solutions that range from desktop-as-a-service up to virtual data centres to enterprise partners and the channel alike.

Orange Clouds

Global telecom provider Orange operates in 34 countries, has more than 170,000 employees worldwide, including 104,000 employees in France. Its B2B branch Orange Business Service works with more than 4000 customers that provide integrated IT and telecoms solutions. To ensure flexibility, agility, elasticity, Orange Business Services chose VMware for its multi-tenancy and self-service solutions.

“Cloud is a very strategic ambition for us, 500 million Euros by 2015,” said Thierry Bonhomme, CEO, Orange Business Services. “It’s a challenge when it comes to innovation it will come from new services from the capacity to integrate all of our customers requirements, both application and combining network infrastructure and cloud infrastructure. Of course, it will be done through our capacity to partner, among those partners VMware is definitely one of the key potential partner for the future.“
