Accelerate Service Innovation – Announcing vCloud for NFV

It’s all about mobility this week with Mobile World Congress in full swing in Barcelona. Business mobility is at the core of VMware’s strategy; we enable customers to flexibly deliver any application to any device, anywhere with security and management that’s simple and unified.

Yesterday we announced VMware vCloud for Network Functions Virtualization (NFV) to help make businesses’ core networks more mobile, agile and cost effective. With communication service providers (CSPs) facing declining margins and the need to accelerate service innovation, this announcement is aimed at helping them deliver these much required solutions.

The new, integrated NFV platform combines our virtualized compute, networking, storage and management solutions with integrated OpenStack support, leading to sustainable cost reductions and improved time to market. It is also the only platform available today that runs different virtual network functions from different vendors side by side on the same unified platform for the cloud. And, as Shekar Ayyar, our recently appointed corporate SVP Strategy and Corporate Development and General Manager, Telco NFV Group, points out, it can help boost your IT transformation:

“By moving Network Functions Virtualization into production today, our CSP customers, such as Vodafone, are accelerating their own transformation into next-generation cloud providers, building the operational expertise needed to succeed in the cloud era ahead of their competition. Today, CSPs can deploy VNFs on VMware vCloud APIs, building valuable production cloud DNA into their operations and support teams. At the same time, they can begin to test OpenStack-based VNFs on the same infrastructure and deploy to production as OpenStack’s suitability for NFV use cases improves in future releases.”

Kevin Salvadori, Director of Group Technology Strategy and Operations, Vodafone Group, also commented on the announcement, and explains why they have chosen vCloud for NFV: “Vodafone chose VMware’s virtualization infrastructure for our initial Telco Cloud services, and we have successfully been in production with several services. VMware was the solution for NFV that is ready for production across the different workloads we care about. As a result, we have been able to accelerate our time to market for new capabilities.”

If you’d like to hear more from VMware at Mobile World Congress, our CEO Pat Gelsinger will deliver a keynote on the “The New Mobile Identity“, tomorrow at 9:15am CET, Hall 4. If you’re at MWC – go and watch it. And if not, follow the action on @VMware_UK
