VMworld 2013: Data Center Innovation At Scale – Key announcements from Day 1 ‎

This year VMware is celebrating our 15th anniversary and coming together for our 10th VMworld. At VMworld 2013 we’re building on our leadership in compute virtualization and announcing new technologies that extend the role of virtualization into every domain of the data center, enabling the infrastructure for customers to transition to the mobile-cloud era.

The Software-Defined Data Center Today

Last year at VMworld, we introduced our software-defined data center vision. The software-defined data center vision builds upon our heritage in compute virtualization by using the same principles of abstraction, pooling and automation to bring flexibility, automation and efficiency to storage and networking. This year, we’re delivering on the vision we laid out for the software-defined data center.

Today, we’re announcing VMware NSX, VMware Virtual SAN, VMware vCloud Suite 5.5 and VMware vSphere with Operations Management 5.5, bringing the software-defined data center to life while fundamentally redefining the role of the hypervisor in the data center.

VMware NSX

VMware NSX will provide the same benefits to networking that virtualization brought to compute by delivering the core network services of switching, routing, firewalling and load balancing in software. By decoupling the network services from hardware, these services can be programmatically created, provisioned and managed over any underlying physical network, reducing costs and drastically improving network agility. We’ve been working with early customers and already have some big accomplishments as we enable virtual networks in the enterprise.

Built upon a groundbreaking distributed architecture, VMware NSX enables network services to scale seamlessly with the needs of the application. Because VMware NSX is tightly integrated with the hypervisor and delivers Layer 2 – Layer 7 services via software, customers simply need to add server nodes to grow their infrastructures. This integrated platform works with VMware and non-VMware environments and provides the flexibility and openness that customers ask for so they can build the most scalable and efficient data centers.

VMware Virtual SAN

Today, we’re introducing VMware Virtual SAN, which extends VMware vSphere to pool server-side flash and direct attached storage into a virtual shared storage array. Like VMware NSX, VMware Virtual SAN is built on a unique distributed architecture that enables storage services to scale seamlessly and linearly with the needs of applications as well as overcome hardware failures at the disk or server level.  Customers can grow storage performance and capacity by adding servers as needed, and it’s fully integrated with VMware vSphere and VMware vCenter Server to simplify management. By integrating VMware Virtual SAN with the hypervisor, VMware has redefined the role of the hypervisor to deliver compute and storage services virtualized and delivered in an elastic, flexible fashion.

What kicked off a revolution in the data center is obviously the most mature product in our portfolio – and we just keep going with VMware vCloud Suite 5.5 and VMware vSphere with Operations Management 5.5. The VMware vCloud Suite enables customers to build and operate a vSphere-based private cloud using the software-defined data center architecture.

The cloud era requires a fundamentally new approach to systems management. Agent-based reactive management has given way to analytics-based predictive management and automated remediation. Provisioning and lifecycle operations of applications must work across multiple clouds while enforcing policy and ensuring compliance.  Customers need new tools to help them become brokers of IT services, renting or building services as appropriate in order to deliver IT as a service.  Many customers are already taking a cloud-oriented approach to their data centers and we’ve been designing our management technologies to solve the problems of the hybrid cloud era as we move away from the legacy server era.

With the vCloud Suite, customers gain the intelligence to automate on-demand provisioning, placement, configuration and control of applications based on policies, simplifying IT operations. This is all built on a foundation of the world’s most popular virtualization platform, and we continue to deliver innovation and new features with vSphere 5.5.
