Meeting regulatory requirements and cutting costs

By Nick Black, Business Manager, End User Computing, Sub Saharan Africa, VMware

The South African regulatory environment is one of the most rigorous in the world, and the cost of managing this can weigh heavily on the organisation. IT ends up treading that clichéd fine line between managing the expectations of the workforce and business versus the realities of cost, compliance and security. Technology offers pathways through this minefield, and the good ones are designed to be flexible enough to adapt to variable organisational requirements and that give IT a measure of peaceful sleep every night.

VMware has the Workspace Suite that incorporates the Horizon 6 Enterprise Edition, Workspace Portal and AirWatch mobile device management solutions. It blends the application, device and data management elements into one centralised identity management and policy enforcement solution so that workers are empowered to work anywhere and at any time, workflows are transformed and IT management is made far simpler. And the 2-factor authentication often eliminates the need for tokens as its seamless, single sign-on access to internal web apps and secure device enrolment processes has been designed to be easy and secure rather than stressful and complex.

Taking a peek under the hood from a compliance perspective – probably the hottest point at the moment – the system allows admins to design policies that ensure simple access with common-sense enforcement based on the sensitivity of the application in combination with the device, user, application and location policies.  This high level of customisation ensures that regulatory requirements, which differ according to industry niche, of course, can be met within current business infrastructures.

The AirWatch Secure Content Locker has content publishing and collaboration features that make it easy to access files from any device, and the self-service console is securely published within the VMware Workspace Portal.  You have enterprise mobility with secure file sharing and collaboration, secure and approved apps, and all within one space that gives IT complete control over them all.  Employees can work on or off any private or public network, on any device, and there is the added bonus of one-touch identity management. This gives employees access to apps, virtualised desktops, SaaS applications with safe file sharing and without the concerns of data loss.

The system allows you to leverage mobile apps to drive engagement between employees, the business and their customers. VMware does this within strict regulatory requirements and using solutions that reduce security threats and management costs. What I like about Workspace Suite is that it can handle nearly any application today and those that are still on their way, making it a long-term investment for the business rather than a short term cure.  VMware Workspace Suite hands IT a toolbox that’s intuitive, future-proof, robust and flexible, and carefully removes the wall that you usually bang your head on when it comes to implementations like these…
