VMworld US 2014: Software-Defined Data Center Overview

As well as the announcements around end-user computing, VMworld US 2014 also saw a number of new developments to VMware’s Software-Defined Data Center solution portfolio. The innovations announced by VMware around the SDDC expand customer choice by supporting open frameworks, as well as hybrid cloud environments based on both VMware and non-VMware technologies. We’ve collected an overview of these announcements below so that you can easily find out more about how they can support your business cloud strategy.

The latest update to the VMware vCloud Suite, version 5.8, provides new functionality for building and managing private clouds based on VMware vSphere private cloud. This includes improved business continuity and disaster recovery, enhanced next-gen apps, improved interoperability with NSX and new proactive support. VMworld US also saw updates to two other key elements of the software-defined data centre, vSphere with Operations Management (vSOM 5.8) and vSphere Data Protection Advance (vDPA 5.5). As you can see, they went down a storm with some of the audience:

There were also announcements around VMware’s integration with the OpenStack cloud platform (more information here) and new capabilities for VMware NSX 6.1.

For anyone managing a software-defined data centre environment and public cloud infrastructure services, we also lunched the VMware vRealize Suite at VMworld. The suite provides a comprehensive management platform for managing public and hybrid cloud environments to support infrastructure and application deployment based on a business’ needs.
