Last week’s VMware Forum London 2013 was a great success, due in part to the number of fantastic event sponsors. One of the gold sponsors was Savvis, a provider of cloud services and hosted IT solutions for enterprises. After the Forum, we sat down withJamie Tyler, Sales Engineering Manager at Savvis, to get his thoughts on the main themes at the event. 

At VMware Forum London I had a number of conversations where several common themes and questions were raised. Some companies wanted to know whether using virtualization technology could help them drive down their TCO and make them more agile to internal and external customers – and if so, how could they achieve that. I responded to many of these with another question, which I knew would have a complex answer; “Can you tell me about your line of business application(s) and how they interact with your end user and other internal systems?”.

This question is key to understanding the scale of the virtualization task, and answering it can be the subject of many hours of analysis and interpretation to fully understand how applications scale horizontally, and whether all the data resides in a central location. There are a lot of applications that are not “cloud ready” due to the complexity of their architecture, and in that scenario a hybrid cloud would be the ideal solution. We integrate all our products into one service so our customers do not need to worry about how their application scales and when, or how, all the integration points are managed. As a service provider, we make sure that the responsibility for that aspect resides with us, and not with the customer.

Another popular theme was around how a business that already has an established on-premise VMware platform can leverage a service provider’s cloud infrastructure. For example, it can be used for seasonal or project-based ramp up of compute services which are not necessarily long term. Ordinarily, the capital expenditure needed to provide the capacity, as well as the time to deploy, would act as inhibitors to the business. We’re evolving our current cloud portfolio to enable VMware on-premise clouds to interact with public / hosted cloud offerings by using vCloud Director, enabling the consumption of our cloud for the duration of the seasonal spike in demand or project. Businesses are also able to purchase cloud credits as part of the VMware license procurement process, and these can be redeemed with a select number of cloud service providers – one of them being Savvis.
