VMworld 2016 Europe – wrap up of the Day Two Keynote

With a different vibe to day one’s opening act, day two’s blues band provided a great introduction for Sanjay Poonen, VMware’s General Manager for End-User Computing. Sanjay kicked off his keynote by making it clear what he was going to focus on – the digital transformation of mobility.

Sanjay laid out the key elements of this approach, and set the stage for a number of VMware executives and customers to dive a bit deeper into how VMware is helping deliver mobility and digital transformation.

Workspace ONE
Sanjay’s focus was on Workspace ONE, and exactly how it can help VMware’s customers deliver enterprise security with consumer simplicity. Highlights of Sanjay’s Workspace ONE run through included:

  • The cost savings of deploying desktop environments through Workspace ONE – up to 30% per user per endpoint
  • How Adidas is using AirWatch to deliver mobility
  • A technology preview of Microsoft Skype for Business optimised for Horizon

SDDC
Following yesterday’s vSphere 6.5 announcement, the day two keynote gave VMware CTO Ray O’Farrell the opportunity to have a closer look at the new features in version 6.5. One of the announcements that got the biggest cheer was the new HTML5 vSphere Client, which Ray described as being modern, responsive and easy to use. Another new update Ray touched on included the comprehensive, built-in security features and its ability to act as a universal app platform. Take a look at the vSphere blog for full details on all these features.

vSAN
Next up was Yanbing Li, General Manager for the Storage and Availability Business Unit at VMware, who went through the latest features of the vSAN update announced yesterday. Take a look at the areas covered by Yanbing here.

Photon
Finishing off the keynote, Kit Colbert, General Manager for Cloud-Native Apps at VMware, gave us an exciting look at developments with VMware Photon Platform. The main takeaway from Kit’s talk was that the Photon Platform now allows Kubernetes containers to be delivered as a service. Watch Kit discussing exactly what this exciting news means.
